Loosen topsoil with a rake to a depth of 1/2". Deep tilling the soil may activate pre-existing weed seed. Spread fertilizer over the area to be seeded. Then use half the recommended setting on your drop or broadcast seeder and spread two times at right angles for new lawns. After spreading seed, cover to a depth of 1/4" and keep moist – watering lightly several times a day – until well rooted and seedlings have emerged.
