Seeding

Loosen topsoil with a rake to a depth of 1/2". Deep tilling the soil may activate pre-existing weed seed. Spread fertilizer over the area to be seeded. Then use half the recommended setting on your drop or broadcast seeder and spread seed two times at right angles for new lawns. After spreading seed, cover to a depth of 1/4" and keep moist—watering lightly several times a day—until well-rooted and seedlings are 1" high. Then water thoroughly once a day. After about 30 days, when seedlings reach a height of 3", mow back to 2". Limited use of the area can be expected in about 6 weeks. The Gold StandardTM brand Turf-Type Tall Fescue Mixture has a medium growth habit that competes aggressively with weeds and other species for establishment.
